Flood hits Nepal -Tibet Boarder-2026

Climate-driven high-mountain hazard: A major glacial/ice and rock slope collapse near Langtang Lirung (Nepal-Tibet border area, Langtang National Park) on 26 August 2026, attributed to warming temperatures weakening permafrost that stabilizes fractured rock and ice.
Catastrophic flooding and destruction: The debris avalanche entered the Lhende Khola and propagated downstream into the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers, destroying houses, streets, and schools in towns and villages near the border.
Severe human impact: At least 1,300 people killed in Nepal, more than 6,000 still missing, and thousands displaced.
Tourism and access status: Major trekking regions (Everest, Annapurna, Manaslu, Mustang, Kanchenjunga, Dolpo and others) remain open and are described as safe by the Trekking Agents Association of Nepal, though in Langtang region road and bridge damage has disrupted some access (alternative routes recommended). The Rasuwagadhi–Kerung route stays closed for Kailash Mansarovar travel; travelers are advised to check current conditions.
