Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is a captivating destination for nature lovers in eastern Nepal. Covering 175 square kilometers across the Sunsari, Saptari, and Udayapur Districts, this Ramsar site features extensive mudflats, reed beds, and freshwater marshes along the Sapta Kosi River. Established in 1976, the reserve’s elevation ranges from 75 to 81 meters.
The landscape is primarily composed of grasslands (68%) and mixed deciduous riverine forest (6%). The reserve is home to diverse wildlife, including 200 species of fish, various amphibians, reptiles, and 31 mammal species, such as the Asian elephant and spotted deer. The Ganges river dolphin has also been spotted in the Koshi River, while numbers of gaur and blue bulls have declined.
Birdwatchers can enjoy 485 bird species, including the watercock, Indian nightjar, and large adjutant stork, along with swamp francolins and rufous-vented grass babblers.

Arrive at Biratnagar Airport. Meet and drive to Koshi Tappu Wildlife Camp
1 pm – Lunch
3 pm – Birdwatching around Saptakoshi river on foot
7 pm – Dinner
5:30 am – Wake up call
6 am – Morning nature walk in the vicinity
8 am – Breakfast
9 am – 6 pm: Raft boat on the upper part of Sapta Koshi River with naturalist to view some of the water birds, water buffaloes, dolphins and various water habitats. End boat trip by the bank of river and have picnic lunch. A short drive to the Koshi Barrage to view some bird life and fresh water dolphins. Late afternoon return to the camp. (Please note: Koshi Barrage and surrounding area is wide and everyday guests will be taken to different areas).
